Justin, known as Curtains due to his stylish 'curtains' hairstyle from his skateboarding days in the late '80s, is a self-taught artist based in Seaford, East Sussex. His work is informed by an abiding interest in developing new languages in stone carving:demonstrating curiosity and humour and exploring the relationship between traditional techniques and contemporary visual culture.

This experimental approach, investigating the interplay between materiality, concept and scale, marks a shift in conventional practices with stone, as he playfully scrutinises the tension between the images he chooses to represent – temporary symbols of their time – and the permanence of the material and its historic associations.

Helena Minginowicz is a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture and Design at the Magdalena Abakanowicz University of Arts in Poznań (2011) and finalist of the Bielska Jesień 2023 contest, she lives and works in Poznań.

“I am inspired by everyday life and the highly subjective way we perceive it. Each of us filters reality through the prism of our own stories and emotions. Do our "filters" have common points? This question provokes me to reflect on the nature of human perception and what it reveals about us. The theme of my artistic work focuses on analyzing relationships and the perception of reality through the lens of art. I use the impression of a visual mirage – an illusion – as a tool to explore the boundaries between what is visible and what is perceived.

The images I create aim not only to appeal to external impressions but also to engage the viewer in reflecting on the construction and interpretation of reality. What particularly interests me is the analysis of the complexity of all kinds of relationships—from moments of closeness to distance, from tension to intimacy. I strive to capture their emotional and philosophical implications. I am also fascinated by the theme of weakness and vulnerability, as a carefully concealed, often shameful, yet integral part of existence – an inner "self."

In my work, I use an airbrush, which allows me to create smooth tonal transitions and subtle contours, as well as sharp, almost surgically "cut" edges, giving the images visual depth and multi-layeredness, contrasted with an aesthetic effect reminiscent of advertising banners, GIFs, and filters that fill contemporary reality. Through this specific painting method, I seek to capture fleeting moments of life and emotions, emphasising their significance and universality. As a result, the emerging images can become not only an expression of personal experiences but also an invitation to a deeper analysis of contemporary realities and the human condition.” — Helena Minginowicz

JAMES BURKE | ARTIST

James Burke (b. 1981) in Paddington, London, is a renowned visual artist, creative director, and entrepreneur. He embarked on his artistic journey with six years of fine art training, culminating in a Master's degree from UAL Central Saint Martins in 2007. In 2008, he founded Acrylicize, a multidisciplinary creative studio that merges art and commerce to explore themes of identity and creativity.

Burke’s artistic practice draws inspiration from Formalism, Hard Edge & Minimalism, the Bauhaus movement, Design Art, and Relational Aesthetics. His work challenges contemporary notions of colour, form, pattern, geometry, and materiality, offering a distinctive and thought-provoking approach to visual art.

Beyond his individual artistic pursuits, Burke is also passionate about fostering a creative community. This vision led to the establishment of The Art House, a multifunctional space in both London and New York that hosts residencies, exhibitions, and events aimed at supporting artists and encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Burke's art has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, including From Nothing, Something at The Art House in 2023 and Wish You Were Here? As both an artist and entrepreneur, Burke continues to make significant contributions to the art world, inspiring others with his innovative approach and commitment to supporting artistic communities.

James Burke's "Camouflage" series is a compelling exploration of identity, perception, and the facades individuals construct in both physical and digital realms. The series features portraits composed of identical plastic figures, each bearing the same neutral expression. This repetition serves to question the authenticity of online personas and the pressure to conform to idealised standards. Burke arranges 330 plastic figures within a 100 x 100 cm acrylic box frame. The uniformity of the figures creates a uniform surface, challenging viewers to discern individual identities within the collective. This piece exemplifies Burke's ability to transform mass-produced objects into a thought-provoking commentary on individuality and conformity. This series invites reflection on the tension between personal authenticity and societal expectations, encouraging viewers to reconsider the ways in which identity is constructed and perceived in contemporary culture.

Artist and designer Little Fish Design creates playful and humorous 'Pop-Surrealist' sculptures and prints that combine images drawn from a wide variety of sources, from classical art to contemporary packaging and advertising.

Little Fish Design likes to combine disparate imagery and materials to create eclectic and amusing pieces. He often uses discarded sweet wrappers and packaging to achieve an enjoyably disarming effect. The artist has also worked as a graphic designer and has always been interested in the overlap of art and graphic and visual design.

“As an Artist & Designer I create playful & humorous ‘Pop-Surrealist’ pieces combining images drawn from classical art to vintage packaging. This current series of limited edition prints entitled ‘The Product Placement Project’ creates a cheeky juxtaposition between old & new, Classical & Pop, giving classical portraiture a humorous populist twist. It could be said to reflect on the functions of fashion, portraiture & advertising (but that would be hugely pretentious) ...they’re mostly meant to amuse.”

Though best known for capturing the glam era, his career spanned five decades, chronicling the rise of music legends and cultural icons with raw intimacy and brilliance.

Born in post-war London, Mick’s artistic roots were shaped at Cambridge University, where he studied Modern Languages and immersed himself in the worlds of poetry, psychedelia, and counterculture. Soon after, Mick abandoned writing and filmmaking to focus solely on photography—a passion that became his life's calling.

He shot over 100 album covers and produced unforgettable portraits of David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, Debbie Harry, and many more. His access wasn’t just professional—it was personal. His images captured the soul behind the stardom, defining an era visually as much as the artists did musically.

Mick’s influence extended well beyond the '70s. From New York’s punk scene to modern icons like Kate Moss and Snoop Dogg, his work remained innovative and deeply human. He published 20 books, hosted a TV series, and was the subject of the acclaimed documentary SHOT!.

His photographs have been exhibited worldwide and are housed in prestigious collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. Though he passed in 2021, Mick Rock's vision and legacy continue to inspire—forever a rock star behind the camera.

ORIOL MASPONS | PHOTOGRAPHER

Oriol Maspons (Spanish, b. 1928 d. 2013) was a prominent Spanish photographer known for his innovative contributions to documentary, portrait, and fashion photography. Born in Barcelona, Maspons was deeply influenced by the artistic and cultural atmosphere of the mid-20th century, particularly in post-war Europe. His work reflects a modernist sensibility, blending social realism with an avant-garde aesthetic.

Maspons initially pursued studies in economics but soon abandoned them to dedicate himself to photography. His passion for the medium developed during the 1950s, when he lived in Paris, where he absorbed influences from the French humanist photography movement, including the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau. Upon returning to Barcelona, he became a member of the Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya, a key hub for experimental photographers in Spain.

“Oriol Maspons’ photographs are a testimony to the evolution of Ibiza and, indeed, of our society over four decades. These images are the result of his travels that began in the mid-50s and continued until the end of the 80s.

It is a much missed time for those of us who were able to enjoy it, even partially. Ibiza was very different from other places, and no other place like it has emerged in recent times.

This island, which is just over 500km2 has been operating at two speeds for a long time. The first gear was slow and relaxed and came from the local population.

With behavioural patterns stated in phrases such as “Come back tomorrow”, “We will fix this tomorrow”, “We won’t be able to help you until tomorrow”, all of which tested the patience of the first foreigners who settled on the island and who had to resolve their daily domestic problems. They had to adapt to the behavioural customs of the Ibizan population. The second speed came from another type of tourist willing to burn the hours of their short stay as quickly as possible. They came and went like there was no tomorrow and were the closest thing to a destructive plague. And the locals, on this island of calm, welcomed this invasive population without any opposition or ill temper, but with serenity. With the island having been an important commercial enclave since the 7th century, the Ibizan has seen how various settlers from other cultures have lived in their territory. The locals viewed these high speed visitors with a mixture of curiosity and disinterest: from the arrival of the first hippies, the beautiful people, the famous VIP’s and those looking for pulling an exciting all-nighter. Likewise, those who came to have fun did so with absolute respect for the first gear inhabitants. I spent 16 summers on this island and I never saw a fight or a conflict, so common in the towns of the peninsula. No complaints and no dramas. It was the 80’s. Society has suffered a global involution. The coexistence of that time with such diverse beings would seem impossible to me today, where everything bothers and everything is discussed. But perhaps the peaceful and conformist character of the Ibizan people still endures and we could successfully repeat the sociological experiment that involved a mix of civilisations and personalities and turned Ibiza into a magical island.

The photographs can make us reflect on whether we are more or less free today that we were 50 years ago, and on what we have lost along the way. I assume we were happier and more carefree. Take a look at the photographs and open your mind listening to Earth, Wind & Fire, Gloria Gaynor and James Brown all at the same time”

SARA POPE | ARTIST

Contemporary artist Sara Pope is best known for her glossy, colourful, pop paintings of lips. Taking inspiration from a successful career in the fashion industry as a shoe designer as well as her work in magazines as a designer and art director, Sara aims to capture the sensuality, beauty and power conveyed by the lips and mouth. Interested in notions of beauty, communication, and the concept of perfection, Sara uses the perspective of her commercial experience to explore these themes.

The starting point is a makeup brush and a lipstick. She paints her subjects’ lips, then, using specific techniques of makeup and lighting, she begins the process of capturing her subjects’ unique expression, through an extensive photographic study. These shots provide the foundation from which Sara draws inspiration to start her painting. The painting process involves several layers of thin oil-diluted paint being overlaid, blending and smoothing the colours extensively at every stage, sometimes also mixing lipstick into the paint. Emulating the stylistic slickness of advertising, the result is glossy, perfect and irresistible.

Sara’s work has been shown in numerous exhibitions and art fairs across London and internationally, including The Saatchi Gallery, London, Next Street Gallery, Paris, The London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy of Arts and SCOPE Miami. Her work is regularly sold at Bonhams Auction House, and she has received commissions for lip portraits from several prominent figures including the Princess of Liechtenstein, Benson Wilson from the English National Opera and Huda Beauty Founder, Huda Kattan. Sara holds the distinction of being the first British female artist in over seven decades to have her artwork accepted into the Vatican collection.

TIM GATENBY | ARTIST

BIOGRAPHY WORKS A+E EVENTS 01 |

Tim Gatenby’s popular culture parodies often combining classical with modern imagery to create humorous paintings. His work uses examines art histories’ relationship with the Internet world we now inhabit.

There is a twisted nostalgia to Gatenby’s paintings. His work subverts not only through subject matter, but also through technique. Gatenby distorts familiar characters, typically drawn as brightly-coloured and crisp cartoons, by blurring lines between classical painting and modern imagery. As with a lot of appropriation art his work inherently says something about its time as it reflects collective imagery back onto society, reanalysing information in a sort of mirror.

Often combining deconstructed cartoon characters with dark humour, his images reflect the pressures of consumerism and modern societal tendency towards over indulgence. Fast food is an ever present theme in Gatenby’s work and is used as a vehicle to convey the easiness of modern life. The radical notion that never has becoming obese required less effort.

Despite the darkness found in the various styles and themes explored in Gatenby’s work, there are often playful, idiosyncratic moments that crop up, as if for his own amusement as much as the viewer’s. A joke or pun can be found through a depicted object seen out of place, or an expectation subverted by an oddity, giving the work a comedic touch of the absurd to cleverly contrast the heaviness found elsewhere.

WALTER RUDOLPH | PHOTOGRAPHER

BIOGRAPHY WORKS A+E EVENTS  01 | 02 | 03 | 04

Walter Rudolph (b. 1915, d. 1997) was a German photographer who worked for airline and tour operators Thomson (TUI) and Iberia during the 70’s and 80’s. Tasked to photograph and promote popular holiday destinations for travel brochures and international photo agencies, Rudolph and his wife had a passion for discovering new places and cultures: Hong Kong, Kenya, Portugal, Israel, Italy, London and the Mediterranean. In 1976 his career took him to the Balearic Island of Ibiza,  an emerging destination growing in popularity with European tourists. The hippy movement was sweeping the island and visitors revelled in the easygoing Ibizan lifestyle, stunning beaches and hedonistic nightlife.

Rudolph’s iconic photography of Ibiza marks the beginnings of modern tourism capturing familiar landmarks and authentic Ibicenco culture. The series is a nostalgic reminder of a bygone Ibiza on the cusp of discovery by the rest of the world. A time capsule containing gems like the exotic Penta Club, Fantasilandia and El Corsario of Dalt Vila or Plaça de Vila now pedestrianised, crowded with vintage cars. The archive is visually stimulating: Rudolph’s creative eye and stylish aesthetic are reflected in unstaged social scenarios, similar to that of photographer Slim Aarons and film director Wes Anderson. The leisure and pleasures of Ibizan society are captured in iconic surroundings like the Argos Hotel. The collection is well rounded with photographs of local Ibicenco doñas in traditional clothing hard at work contrasting with chic Iberian Air hostesses and excited airline passengers. Carefully curated by Agony + Ecstasy Gallery Founder Emma Salahi, the collection comprises 38 photographs in a 6x6 analog format taken by Rudolph between 1976 and 1980.
